Summon is a WunderType alternative for Mac when you want to pick a command, read the result, and follow up before anything replaces your text. WunderType corrects the selection in place and gets out of the way. Those are different habits.
What is WunderType?
WunderType is a menu-bar Mac app. You select text in Mail, Slack, Pages, or another app, press a shortcut (⌘⇧G by default), and the rewritten text replaces the selection. It ships with grammar, writing, concise, formal, and casual modes, plus custom prompts that can each have a shortcut.
As of October 27, 2026, wundertype.com lists four ways to run it: on-device models through Apple MLX, Ollama, your own OpenAI key, and OpenRouter. On-device mode needs Apple silicon. The site says there is no account, no telemetry, and no WunderType backend. The listed price is $8.99 once.
It is a sharp tool if the correction should land without a review step.
Why look for a WunderType alternative?
- The text changes before you see it. In-place replacement is fast. It is also final unless you undo. A follow-up (“shorter”, “warmer”) needs another shortcut, not a reply in the same result.
- Local models are the headline. If you do not want to download a model or run Ollama, the privacy story that makes WunderType interesting is the part you are not using.
- One OpenAI key, or a router. Anthropic, Google, and xAI are not first-class providers on the page checked. OpenRouter can reach some of them. Summon talks to those four providers directly.
None of that makes the $8.99 app a bad buy. It makes it a specific one.
Summon as a WunderType alternative
Summon starts from the same selection. Press ⌘K, pick a preset or a command you saved, and the result opens in a panel. You can follow up in that panel, then insert it back. Ready-made commands for replies, meetings, and code are in the command library. Commands can return text or an image.
You bring a key for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or xAI. The key stays in the macOS Keychain. The request goes from your Mac to that provider. Summon does not store the prompt or the result. Usage analytics are optional, pseudonymous, and they exclude your text. Summon does not run an on-device model, Ollama, or OpenRouter. If offline writing is the requirement, WunderType is the better fit.
Summon needs Apple silicon and macOS 15 Sequoia or later. It is not on the Mac App Store.
WunderType vs. Summon
| WunderType | Summon | |
|---|---|---|
| How you use it | Shortcut replaces the selection in place | Select text, press ⌘K, follow up in a panel, insert the result |
| Models | On-device MLX, Ollama, OpenAI, OpenRouter | OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, and xAI, with your own key |
| Offline | Yes, with on-device AI on Apple silicon, or Ollama | No |
| Privacy | No account and no telemetry, per the WunderType site. Cloud calls go to OpenAI or OpenRouter | Prompts and results are not stored by Summon. Optional usage analytics exclude your text. See the privacy policy |
| Platform | Menu-bar app. On-device mode needs Apple silicon | Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later |
| Price | $8.99 once, as listed on October 27, 2026 | Weekly $1.99, yearly $29.99, or lifetime $79.99. Provider tokens are separate. 72-hour trial on weekly and yearly |
WunderType wins on price and on keeping a correction on the Mac. Summon wins when you want a named command, a follow-up, and a choice of four providers without a router.
Is WunderType a subscription?
No. The site lists $8.99 once. Cloud models are still billed by OpenAI or OpenRouter. On-device and Ollama use is not. Summon’s lifetime license is $79.99 and includes every future update on up to three Macs. Weekly and yearly include a 72-hour trial. Every Summon plan has a 14-day refund.
Which one should you use?
Choose WunderType if the fix should appear where the cursor already is, and if on-device models or an $8.99 cap matter.
Choose Summon if you want to see the draft and steer it. The same choice against a preview-first app is the RewriteBar alternative. The wider set is the best AI writing apps for Mac.
