MacGPT Alternative for Mac (2026)

A MacGPT alternative for Mac when you want a command on selected text, not a ChatGPT window in the menu bar. Compare the two setups.

October 27, 2026 comparison

Summon is a MacGPT alternative for Mac when you want a command on the text you selected, using whichever provider you connected, instead of a ChatGPT window living in the menu bar. MacGPT wraps ChatGPT. Summon runs a writing action and puts the result back.

What is MacGPT?

MacGPT puts ChatGPT in the menu bar. The site describes a global popup, an inline trigger phrase, and a choice between the embedded ChatGPT website and a native mode that uses your own OpenAI key. A ChatGPT Plus login unlocks the website features. There is also an iPhone app, GeePeeTee, which uses your API key.

The public FAQ, checked October 27, 2026, still says MacGPT is supported on macOS Monterey and Ventura, and it still describes a waiting list for GPT-4 API access. That is the page as it stands. This post does not claim the app is abandoned. It does say the system requirements and the model notes on that page have not been brought up to date. No current price was listed. The site invites you to download and try it.

Why look for a MacGPT alternative?

  • It is a chat window. Useful for a question. Awkward for “rewrite this paragraph in the app I already have open.” The inline trigger fails in some apps, which their own FAQ names.
  • One provider. ChatGPT, either through the website login or an OpenAI key. Anthropic, Google, and xAI are not part of the product described on the site.
  • The public page looks frozen. Monterey, Ventura, and a GPT-4 waitlist are not a 2026 setup guide. Check what you actually download before you rely on it.

Summon as a MacGPT alternative

Select the text, press ⌘K, and run a command. The result stays in a panel for a follow-up, then you insert it. Commands for replies, edits, and code are in the command library. A free-form question is possible too, but the app is built for the selection in front of you, not for a standing chat.

You can connect OpenAI, and also Anthropic, Google Gemini, or xAI. Keys stay in the macOS Keychain. The request goes to that provider. Summon does not store the prompt or the result. Optional analytics exclude the text. Details are in the privacy policy. Summon needs Apple silicon and macOS 15 Sequoia or later, which is a higher bar than the macOS versions MacGPT’s FAQ still lists.

MacGPT wins if you want ChatGPT itself, including the website, in the menu bar. Summon wins if the job is a command on a selection and the model does not have to be ChatGPT.

Does MacGPT need a ChatGPT subscription?

The site says a ChatGPT login unlocks the embedded website, and that the native mode can use your own OpenAI API key instead. Summon always uses your own key, and the app itself is a separate license. There is no included model credit.

Which one should you use?

Choose MacGPT if a ChatGPT popup is what you open all day, and the download you get still runs on your macOS version.

Choose Summon if you want the result inserted back into the original app. A current menu-bar comparison with local models is the WunderType alternative. The shortlist is the best AI writing apps for Mac.
